The Hosting Of The Sidhe
By William Butler Yeats
The host is riding from Knocknarea
And over the grave of Clooth-na-Bare;
Caoilte tossing his burning hair,
And Niamh calling Away, come away:
Empty your heart of its mortal dream.
The winds awaken, the leaves whirl round,
Our cheeks are pale, our hair is unbound,
Our breasts are heaving our eyes are agleam,
Our arms are waving our lips are apart;
And if any gaze on our rushing band,
We come between him and the deed of his hand,
We come between him and the hope of his heart.
The host is rushing ‘twixt night and day,
And where is there hope or deed as fair?
Caoilte tossing his burning hair,
And Niamh calling Away, come away.
William Butler Yeats evoked the Wild Hunt in “The Hosting of the Sidhe”, the opening poem in his collection inspired by Gaelic faery lore, The Celtic Twilight.
Primordial – Did a reading of this poem with background music on their album Calm Before The Storm!
They transformed a text, a poem, into something musical. The poem is recited out loud well music to match the content of the poem is evoked. This gives a totally different spin and possible a deeper understanding of the poem since it now affects a wider array of senses. Though this may not be a typical remix I think it qualifies as one as they took something, a poem, and transformed it into something of heir own.
Also, who ever did the visual for this made a remix as well. Since they added another layer, pictures/visuals, to the project.

I found this clip on dark matter and thought it related to my keyword. I think since the root word of materialism is matter there is an obvious connection, but the other one is being in reference to the first definition of the word there being a spiritual world and a material world, one you can touch and see. Well, you can not see dark matter and we have no idea what it is. So, it kind of fits in between. Also, that matter has gravity is another topic you could explore.

Materialism Article

This second thing I put up is an article about Hawaiian natives and their connection to the land. In fact one quote is “we are the land.” I put this up because I found this interesting because even though they are taking about material, the land, you would probable never call them materialistic. I think it is a good play between the deferent meanings of the word.

Well, searching for a good artifact on materialism I found this picture. Even though it is one of those horrible photoshoped slogan pictures I think it hit the mark. What I also noticed is that it came from a site called http://leftwingconspiracy.com/. I really could not tell at first if this was meant as a joke or if it was made by a bunch of liberals. In the end I found that in fact it was. Seems they have a facebook page too.

Keyword: Materialism
I found this weeks keyword a bit unique. I did find it a bit harder to fit everything together, but what works for me is just starting, after that I can flush out what I do not like.
Materialism in Keywords is stated as a pretty complex word, which are usually the more interesting. The word is derived from the word matter. Meaning a “substance from which all living and non-living matter is made.”(197). The other definition I found useful was its latter meaning in relation to the “primary concern with the production or acquisition of things and money.”(197) I think between these two meaning you can find the most interesting aspects of the word.
I think most people these days attach a negative context to the word. Saying someone is materialistic is a bit like saying they are soulless or heartless and only concerned with material possessions. This definition comes a bit more from Marx, at least keywords seems to think so. I think the fact that the root word for this is matter gets lost on people. I think before it was more to distinguish between the other worldly, the afterlife, and the world now, the material world. Also, some philosophy base solely around this and state
that “the theory of materialism holds that the only thing that exists is matter; that all things are composed of material and all phenomena (including consciousness) are the result of material interactions. In other words, matter is the only substance.”(wikipedia).
The Pepe Deluxe Cd started out with some spoken words: Are you ready to move out in style? You ready for all the luxury one big swinging world can offer. Are you ready? Go! I think the word “luxury” is interesting here. I found it crazy that today’s culture is so fixed on material possession. Instead of talking about finding happiness or being challenged it talks about luxury. Though I think materialism has always been there, and always will, it has become a national obsession.
The picture I have was of a rave looking event with an Indian tepee. Though it has little to do with the rave aspect of the picture I think you can connect the tepee and the Indian religion with materialism. I think Indians had a far more spiritual and earth based religion, as did all of Europe before Christianity, than a materialistic one. What is interesting is the dual meaning of the word here. Having a more earth based religion would actually, make it more materialistic would it not, but this goes against the second definition of the word which incorporates more of the owning and production of things but not a connection to land.
The glow stick was much harder to incorporate into materialism. Besides the obvious that it is matter I really don’t have much to say about it. The Enchilada Recipe actually just made me very hungry. I thought of the fact that matter helps produce other matter, obviously you need to eat. I think that food is materialistic, but usually not related to materialism, I guess unless you run up a bill at a restaurant for $500 for one plate of food.
I think materialism has quite a few deferent meanings. It just all depends on the context in which you place the word.
